Share, learn, and make a difference! Get involved in the development of the Mayme A. Clayton Library and Museum (MCLM). We are seeking bright and enthusiastic volunteers of all ages and backgrounds who are interested in exploring African-American history and culture and contributing to the growth of MCLM.
Knowledge of library or museum work is not required--we will train you! Volunteer opportunities are available in administration, education, exhibitions, programming, cataloging, and research. To be considered for a volunteer position a Volunteer Application must be completed, which can be found below.
Social Media and Marketing
Completed applications are accepted on an ongoing basis and may be submitted electronically, mailed to, or dropped off at MCLM. Incomplete applications cannot be accepted. Receipt of application does not guarantee a volunteer position. The Volunteer Coordinator will contact the applicant to confirm receipt of the application. Applications will be reviewed by the Volunteer Coordinator and appropriate staff members in light of current needs and openings. Due to MCLM's small staff, please allow up to seven (7) business days to receive a response. Applications will be kept on file for one year for future consideration as openings occur. If selected, the Volunteer Coordinator will contact perspective volunteers within one week to provide an update or to schedule a time for an interview. During the interview the Volunteer Coordinator and the applicant will discuss goals, work plans, and expectations; be introduced to the staff; and take a tour of MCLM. Once selected as a volunteer, applicants will be assigned a project, or a work-plan will be finalized, and a work schedule set. The Volunteer Coordinator will serve as the volunteer's primary contact.
Please fill out our Volunteer Application below and e-mail it to Lloyd Clayton. You may also contact MCLM by emailing a Volunteer Application to firstname.lastname@example.org or calling us at 310-202-1647.
Young Docent Program (Summer 2016)
If you are a high school student between the ages of 15-17 or a middle school student ages 12-14 and would like to work in areas throughout The Mayme A. Clayton Library and Museum, supporting staff on a variety of projects, apply to be a young docent for the summer at MCLM!
What is a Docent?
A docent is a volunteer tour guide. The word derives from the Latin word docere, meaning "to teach." Docents serve as a vital link between the public and our museums. Docents:
• Facilitate learning by helping audiences of all ages understand and enjoy our permanent collections and special exhibitions, and
• Engage visitors in interactive experiences that give them a new appreciation of the visual arts.
For more information, please download the Young Docent application below. To apply, please fill out both the volunteer application below as well as the Young Docent application and e-mail it to Lloyd Clayton at email@example.com.
If you would like further information about either the Volunteer Progarm and/or the Young Docent Summer Program please contact our Executive Director, Lloyd Clayton, at 310-202-1647 or e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org.
